Of course it wasn’t real.
The key tipoff for me was the description of Joaquin Phoenix climbing up an embankment and into the shrubbery in Central Park following his Letterman appearance. The whole thing was too much like the scene described by an obviously drug-addled Farrah Fawcett during a similar Letterman interview.
